Description - External
Under the general supervision of the Tool Design Supervisor, and with considerable latitude for independent judgment and initiative, the Machine Tool Design Engineer, Class III is responsible for planning, designing, laying out, and creating working drawings of the most difficult types of fixtures, arbors, gauges, cutters, special machinery fixtures and tools as it relates specifically to operations and machines at the Machining Center. These precision, close tolerance tools and gauges must support in the fabrication, assembly, inspection or handling of the company’s products, specifically transmissions, drive systems, and all other precision machine components. Working with or without instructions, creates and lays out tools required to do a job considering such factors as cost, safety of operation, methods of production, etc. Incumbent usually works from rough plans either sketched or verbal. Follows up tools in work coordinating activities with production supervision in order to eliminate delays due to faulty tooling or workmanship. Makes recommendations for tool changes based on knowledge gained from shop follow-up. Incumbent may direct the activities of other Tool Design Engineers who are assisting him on a major designing job for temporary periods of time. Duties may involve miscellaneous functions such as estimating time required to make tools; reviewing Engineering prints and drawings for practicability form a Production Engineering stand point; advising vendors, sub-contractors and our shop on manufacturing problems.
Qualifications - External
Education equivalent to two (2) years of college plus four (4) to six (6) years of experience in the aircraft industry designing a variety of tooling with at least two (2) years utilizing Computer-Aided Design tools (preferably CADAM or CATIA). Should be proficient and knowledgeable in tool fabrication and machine shop practices, GD&T, and close tolerance low volume production processes.
